The Angel at Spinkhill
After it was rescued by the local community from the clutches of a property development firm, The Angel at Spinkhill was taken over by Chris and Jean Norfolk, the husband-and-wife team already at the helm of The Elm Tree in nearby Elmton. Now sharing their experience and know-how between the two ventures, the pair have certainly worked their magic to establish a lively and welcoming setting that buzzes with energy and conviviality.
Food at The Angel is first class. Huge, juicy prawns – served to patrons visiting for a night of gin tasting and antipasti – whizzed past as we awaited our starters of succulent scallops with black pudding fritters and asparagus, and barbecue chicken wings. For the main event, we devoured perfectly cooked blade of beef and The Angel’s flavour-packed Devil Burger. I couldn’t leave without satisfying my sweet-tooth with heavenly vanilla creme brûlée, while my husband pitched in with tangy passion fruit cheesecake.
Menus at The Angel change regularly but typically showcase a wide range of British and European dishes. The bar, meanwhile, has been stocked with select products, spanning world wine, real ale, craft beer and premium soft drinks. I counted three wood-burners and several cosy corners in which to enjoy a drink, brunch or the very popular Sunday lunch. A lovely garden and outdoor area provide yet more reasons to visit this excellent pub.
