The Railway Inn is a village pub set just a short drive from the Cathedral town of Southwell and Nottinghamshire's River Trent, and if you're not driving, it's only a stone's throw from Lowdham's very own railway station. This traditional pub harks back to the good old days, with its picture-postcard white-washed exterior, low beams and open log fires.

The Railway Inn is run by the hard-working landlord and landlady David Miles and Dona Poundall who, incidentally, also do most of the cooking in-house using fresh eggs from their own chickens and many ingredients sourced from local farms. This friendly pub is very much part of the local community, utilising local suppliers and even giving local artists the opportunity to exhibit their work on the walls. A wide range of live entertainment is provided, with local skiffle bands, rock bands and ballad singers alternating every weekend with the ever-popular karaoke for those who fancy showing off their own talents.

People come from far and wide to this charming and accommodating pub. The impressive selection of cask ales draws enthusiasts taking part in the 'Cask Ale Trail'. Guest ales are changed weekly, and choices of house and speciality wines are available if that's your preferred tipple. The food is equally impressive, with popular starters including succulent and delicious breaded garlic mushrooms, mains such as tender Wexford steak lavishly coated with Stilton, and, of course, a selection of delicious desserts like classic apple pie and custard. Sunday roasts are particularly popular here, attracting many diners with their reasonable prices (£5.50 or £7.95, available between noon and 6pm).

The extremely accommodating opening times at The Railway Inn afford you the rare convenience to dine at your leisure, and you can't help but relax and feel at ease among these friendly people. At this inimitable inn you'll find good old-fashioned home cooking and warm conversation - so why not climb aboard and give The Railway Inn a try?
