The Railway

Gastropub

0.5 miles
Station Road, Lowdham, NG14 7DU

Following extensive renovation in March 2017, this historic pub in Lowdham is situated by the village station and rail crossing and has been transformed into a striking modern venue with broad appeal. The attention to detail is impressive; The Railway is full of quirky touches and unique features. Every comfy nook and cranny tells a story – leather suitcases form the backs of benches, antique cameras hang from their straps on the walls and vintage photos, postcards – and, of course, railway memorabilia – help to evoke a pleasing connection to the past.

Upon entering, your gaze will be drawn to the open kitchen where you can see the kitchen team hard at work on the pass. Led by co-owner Mark Osborne, the kitchen team’s talent is evident from the get-go. The Railway is the vision of coowners Mark and David and there is not an element of service the proprietors don’t oversee with passion and dedication. The Railway is a rare find; it’s a friendly gastropub embraced by happy locals as well as a destination for enthusiastic foodies from further afield. They visit to sample the award-winning menu, charming ambience and attentive service and they return time and again. In 2018 alone The Railway gained six major accolades, including being crowned a regional winner in The National Pub & Bar Awards and winner in the Best New Pub, Bar or Gastropub category of the Nottingham Restaurant & Bar Awards.

The food is simply wonderful. Succulent scallops atop butternut squash purée with an inspired sprinkle of hazelnuts make for a special starter; slow-cooked shoulder of lamb with creamed potatoes, butter beans, chorizo, and a root vegetable hotpot sauce is a triumphant main; Mark’s signature dish of Colston Bassett parfait with pickled walnuts, grapes, serrano ham, fruit relish and biscuits is both a revelation and a heavenly marriage of flavours. Traditional favourites can also be found on the tempting menu. The epic Railway burger is heartily recommended and you must try the mouth-watering combination of caramelised pineapple tarte Tatin with sweet chilli caramel and ginger ice cream. A great-value set menu is available for lunch and early evening meals.
