Leicester Best Bar None Awards' 'Best Independent Pub' for 2011, 2012 and 2013, the Rutland & Derby Arms, is a city-centre pub with plenty to offer. Everything here has been carefully considered and nothing is without a little twist or special quality.
Happily located close to the Curve Theatre, Highcross and the Leicester Tigers' ground, Rutland & Derby Arms is convenient; but such is its excellence, it deserves a visit in its own right. The pub specialises in craft beer, handcrafted cocktails and an exciting wine list, so there will always be a tipple to suit. The food offering is quirky and British with bags of flavour and all produce ethically sourced. Small plates, like chilli and coriander tempura squid with kimchi mayonnaise, are perfect pint partners, while the flatbreads - the British chorizo and applewood smoked Cheddar with wild roquette is my favourite - are hand stretched, stone baked and outstanding. Sandwiches, such as the Jack's fish goujon with tartare sauce and Pauleys leaves, for example, are seriously tasty. Hearty plates, including beef and ale puff pastry pie with garden pea and Maris Piper mashed potatoes, are big on portion size and even bigger on flavour. Mondays are dedicated to treats and tests, with a two-for-one offer on flatbreads and the opportunity to join in the pub quiz; and Tuesdays are all about West Country-sourced burgers, again with two offered for the price of one.
For sunny days and warm nights, Rutland & Derby Arms has one of the best alfresco spots in the city, complete with a heated rooftop terrace. Add live music into the mix, and you have the perfect pub package
