You'll find Jones' in Leicester's fashionable West End. It occupies a three-storey former 1920s grocer's shop and retains many quaint and original features from days gone by. Nowadays the ground floor is a welcoming bar and bistro, while the middle floor is a dining room with a picture window overlooking bustling Braunstone Gate. However, the top floor - the kitchen - is where the action happens. This is where Andrew Collyer, chef and owner, works his magic while his wife, Camille, welcomes diners to their deservedly popular restaurant.

Jones' is open for breakfast, light snacks, lunch and diner, and offers two courses for £12 from a choice of pasta, risotto and gnocchi dishes - excellent value. Tables are covered with pristine white cotton tablecloths, gleaming cutlery and polished glasses. While we waited, we nibbled on warm bread rolls, accompanied by herb butter and a bowl of olives, while we perused the mouth-watering menu.

My partner started with five fat, succulent tiger prawns sautéed in garlic with a white wine butter sauce. I had mussels Jones': a huge portion of plump mussels cooked in an aromatic sauce of fennel, garlic, chilli and white wine. My partner's main course was tender calf's liver, crisp pancetta, celeriac and apple mash with a rich red wine gravy. I set my heart on fillet of cod on pea purée with a lemon and oil dressing. We shared fresh seasonal vegetables and chunky fries. It was a shame to spoil the faultless, artistic arrangement of the food on each platter, but of course we did. And we were delighted to find that everything was cooked beautifully.

How on earth could we manage dessert? We shared the chef's platter of homemade puddings, with bitesized portions of six of the best: ice cream, creme brulée, chocolate cheesecake with key lime sorbet, syllabub, Florentine twist, and chocolate and raspberry tart. Every mouthful was divine.

With a vibrant atmosphere, locally sourced, quality fresh food prepared by a team of talented chefs, and cordial staff, this is good-value, top-notch dining
