The Gate Bistro is a relaxed, elegant restaurant with friendly, professional staff and a commitment to great food. Cool, casual and contemporary, it boasts quarterly changing menus and a daily changing specials board. The chef here prioritises the provenance of ingredients - where possible, they are locally sourced. Meat is hung for 28 days and the fish is brought in daily. To start, we tried pan-fried black bream fillets served with coconut milk and chilli noodles. The fish tasted totally fresh and was cooked to perfection, while the noodles were sweet and creamy, with just a hint of chilli. The plump, juicy scallops were equally divine, drizzled in a Hollandaise sauce and accompanied by smoked bacon and robust local black pudding. Succulent roast venison was then served, with a tasty wine reduction, potato and celeriac mash and sweet and earthy roasted root veg. The chicken cooked three ways was likewise very satisfying - it comprised a light, buttery pie with golden pastry and baby leeks, a slow-cooked leg and rich garlic butter chicken wings laid on a potato rosti and presented with chicken crackling. Homemade sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream did the job of rounding everything off in British style. For wholesome, quality fare in the heart of Leicester, we recommend visiting The Gate.
