Windows on New Walk offers an outstanding dining experience. The recently refurbished 60-cover restaurant is pleasant and modern, with an ambience that encourages convivial chatter over superb food. The menu is stylishly understated, offering the best in terms of quality of ingredients and preparatory methods and skills. The chefs are flexible if you have particular dietary requirements, and children will always find something tasty to eat too.

Menus change monthly, and every one contains a mix of classics and modern dishes with inventive twists on what you might expect. The lunch menu is ideal for a light meal, while the more extensive evening menu, from which we dined, features starters like spiced lamb meatballs, grilled mackerel and a salad of mixed beetroot with smoked salmon. We sampled the garlic-roasted mushrooms with duck-fat toast and a luxurious drizzle of truffle oil, and the sweet potato falafel with flavoursome red pepper and feta hummus. Both were excellent.

For your main course you might select sirloin steak, cooked just the way you like it, spinach roulade with sunblushed tomatoes or hake crusted in dill and saffron. After an interesting and informative conversation with staff, I chose the flawlessly presented pan-fried duck breast with celeriac purée, potato fondant and blackberry sauce. My companion, meanwhile, plumped for oven-roasted monkfish wrapped in Parma ham, whose accompaniments of creamed leeks and chargrilled courgettes provided wonderful contrast, giving rise to new texture combinations with every mouthful. Two top-quality desserts rounded off the evening, and a friendly debate over whether the coconut pannacotta with caramelised pineapple and pineapple syrup was better than the hazelnut meringue and chocolate ganache torte ensued.

The quality of each of plate we sampled clearly demonstrated that all produce is fresh. The extensive and imaginative wine list, with tipples available by the bottle or glass, complements the menus well. Service throughout our meal was unhurried and unobtrusive but never inattentive or slow.

With ample free parking, the peace of its situation beside the pedestrianised New Walk and an impeccably presented interior, this is a restaurant that should be on everyone's radar
