Located in an area packed with history (Ratby's roots date back through Saxon and Roman times to the Iron Age), The Bulls Head is a real find. This large and justifiably popular pub-restaurant reopened in summer 2012 after an extensive makeover. Traditional English pub decor flows through a fascinating choice of indoor and outdoor bar and dining areas.

This well-run pub benefits from three managers and an impressive band of chefs, making for a friendly, welcoming and attentive team. Behind the bar, the selection of Everards beers is accompanied by three guest ales. Spiced rums go down well, and in summer a glass of cider is a popular choice. The wine list features wines from around the world and our merlot was delightful, served at just the right temperature.

Highlights of our meal were the mushrooms, freshly beer-battered in the pub kitchen and served hot and crispy; sirloin steak that simply couldn't have been bettered; and cod loin Florentine that was large and succulent, wrapped in the thinnest of Parma ham which added a perfect touch of saltiness. We followed these delights with a zingy lemon and orange syrup sponge. Clearly, all meals at The Bulls Head are cooked and served to a high standard and, happily, are generous in size too. Customers return to dine, time and again, daytime or evening. There is a lunchtime specials menu, a full dining menu and a great British Sunday roast to end the week with
