The Cheshire Cheese Inn

Once a pit-stop for those traversing the old salt-carrying route from Cheshire to Yorkshire, this gorgeous Peak District inn dates back to 1632 - when payment for lodging would be made in cheese. Not far from the famous caverns of Castleton and relatively untouched - the original cheese hooks are still visible - The Cheshire Cheese Inn is proudly traditional and offers homely open fires, five draught beers and home-cooked fare sourced from local suppliers such as Middleton Dairy and Gibbs of Tideswell. Try dishes such as goat's cheese with bacon and red onion chutney and apricot nut roast with Cheshire cheese on a bed of creamy leeks. Or, push the boat out with Elmhurst Farm venison steak and red wine sauce followed by white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake.
