Monk Cocktail Bar
Cocktail Bar and Lounge
The owners of Monk Cocktail Bar have succeeded in creating a relaxed and unpretentious setting in which to enjoy cocktails and beers. Inside, warm lighting softens the bar’s industrial wood and brickwork interior, and an intimate mezzanine floor creates an atmospheric space for catch-ups over drinks.
A fascinating handwritten list of cocktails and ingredients is displayed on the wall. The menu changes with the seasons, making the most of fresh fruit and herbs supplied by a local greengrocer. Each member of the friendly team is highly trained and wellinformed about the offering, so questions are always invited.
Drinking cocktails in a place like this is pure theatre. My first libation, called F.Y.T or Flight, was an intoxicating blend of aged tequila, thyme liqueur, vermouth and Monk Bitters. The Espresso No.2 that I sampled afterwards was a subtle mix of vodka, coffee grains, apricot, orange, chocolate bitters and maple – a beautifully presented sensory whirlwind.
There’s an extensive range of locally sourced craft beer, and drivers will be enticed by the range of non-alcoholic temptations. All of Monk’s cocktails are created and named by the owners, so you can revel in the likes of a Heaven’s Sake or Jessica Rabbit. In addition to offering their carefully crafted list of libations, the team welcomes bespoke drinks orders, so guests can pick a spirit and flavour and decide on a sweet or sour revelation.
