The Lord Nelson is a cosy pub situated in Burton Joyce, a picturesque village on the outskirts of Nottingham. On a chilly Sunday afternoon, we headed there to warm up after a riverside walk, and a roaring fire welcomed us along with smiling staff and friendly locals. We were presented with a mouth-watering menu of high-quality local produce and an impressive drinks list to suit any budget. The Lord Nelson offers everything from lunchtime bar meals to three-course evening dinners, plus weekend breakfasts and Sunday lunch family-friendly platters - not to mention an array of homemade cakes and goodies to tempt you at the bar. Real ales and guest beers provide quality refreshment, alongside signature cocktails and an extensive wine list.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting on our visit, and there was a pleasant aroma of freshly baked bread in the air. The selection of tasty dishes, including local game, traditional roasts, fresh fish and seasonal vegetables, tempted us to forget about expanding waistlines. We couldn't resist the hearty Sunday roast and went for the 'half and half' option, so we could have a bit of everything. Piled high and bursting with freshness and flavour, the meal was delicious. After glancing at the pudding menu - which included hot treacle sponge, seasonal fruit crumble and locally sourced British farmhouse cheese - we miraculously found room for dessert. The treacle sponge was light and served with lashings of thick vanilla custard.

The Lord Nelson is the second offering from The Moleface Pub Company - owned by former head chef of the award-winning Bluu Group, John Molnar, local businessman Matt Cullen, and successful entrepreneurs Matt Saunders and Simon Patterson. John's impressive cheffing skills and food knowledge have not gone unrecognised - in the few short months The Lord Nelson has been open, it has received glowing reviews in the national press, including being named as serving the 'best chips in the UK' by top food critic Terry Durack. Make a date in your diary to see for yourself why this charming pub is proving such a success.
