Royal Oak Inn
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
Our food was served in the conservatory with doors that opened on to a peaceful garden. As well as a very extensive menu with dishes that are all freshly cooked, the specials board also included the much-neglected delight of skate wings in butter. Eventually we chose the mushrooms in a creamy sauce and volcano prawns as starters.
The main course of steak and ale pie was served as a generous wedge and was a good reminder of how real home cooking should be, with melting pastry and a fragrant filling. My salmon was also perfectly cooked, moist and delicious. Both meals came with fresh vegetables and the sauces were served in individual jugs, so you could take as much or as little as you wanted - a nice touch.
The puddings carried on the home-cooked theme with a wonderful fresh rhubarb crumble and one of the nicest treacle sponges we have ever tasted.
The wine list was well balanced with the welcome surprise of a choice of house wines. Our Jack Rabbit chardonnay and merlot came at just the right temperatures and were much appreciated.
There is something for everyone at 'The Splash'. It is well worth a visit for the food, but is also as a wonderful place for memorable weddings, family parties or a peaceful night away staying in the smart accommodation. We can't wait to go back.
