Well known for its life-size fibreglass cows 'strolling' through the garden and the prancing black horse depicted on the wall, this homely inn is what you might call a 'proper pub' - with bags of personality, an air of history and cosy accommodation (complete with four-poster beds). The restaurant is charmingly old-fashioned and complete with smiling staff, while the similarly styled bar is full of loyal locals and friendly chatter. The original building dates back to the 1690s - low ceilings, dark oak beams and its sturdy structure are a dead giveaway.

There is an immense choice when it comes to the food. More than 30 main courses were available on the menu, including ten vegetarian options, and there were no less than 15 desserts when we visited. We plumped for the peppered smoked mackerel and fried mushrooms to start. Each dish was satisfying and flavourful - the fish seasoned perfectly and the mushrooms meaty. I followed up with a juicy, tasty main of butterfly chicken with garlic and herbs accompanied by light, crunchy chips. My companion chose a rich and delicious mushroom, broccoli and Stilton bake - a combination that worked perfectly. Dessert was a double toffee whammy - cheesecake for him, ice cream sundae for me. Both were sublime, and at prices like these it's little wonder those loyal locals keep on coming back.
