The Buttery

0.5 miles
Eyam Hall, Eyam, S32 5QW

Situated in the heart of the Peak District, in the delightful grounds of Eyam Hall, this charming yet sophisticated café and restaurant offers elegant bistro dining. Owned by the hall’s residents, the Wrights, and located just five miles from Sheffield and ten miles from Chatsworth, this is the perfect spot to break up a day’s sightseeing. Amble through the spacious Craft Courtyard and you’ll find a place where 17th-century architecture blends perfectly with contemporary comforts. Guests can stop in the downstairs café for a spot of lunch, or perhaps to sample one of the mouth-watering cakes and pastries. Later in the evening, wander up to the well-stocked bar to enjoy a drink before dinner. You can have your pick of classic cocktails, soft drinks and spirits, or choose from an extensive gin menu. Alternatively, peruse the hand-picked wine list or take advantage of the wide range of craft beer on offer, which includes Buttery Blonde from the local Eyam brewery. Drink in hand, climb the spiral staircase that leads to the Stables restaurant, which is bursting with character and charm. Original beams, stonework, wood panelling and restored pictures from Eyam Hall blend seamlessly with the soft lighting and gentle background music.

The menu brings together an array of expertly crafted dishes, placing real emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. I plumped to start with a plate of corn-fed chicken terrine, which was a triumph of complementing flavours and textures. The tender smoked chicken came with creamy truffle and tarragon aioli, a delicate sliver of pork crackling and cracker stuffing. Eager to sample my main, I selected juicy braised lamb breast in blackberry jus. The lamb was beautifully presented and accompanied by crisp fondant potatoes, braised shallots, sweet caramelised onion and pickled blackberry. To bring the meal to a triumphant finale, I selected a rich frozen chocolate tart – a confection of walnut, burnt white chocolate, delicate pastry slices, silky smooth parfait, and sumptuous peanut brittle. With the elegant yet laid-back café providing a delightful lunch menu, and the restaurant’s sophisticated high-end provender, The Buttery has achieved a winning combination. Couple this with amiable, efficient staff and an enchanting setting, and you have the perfect place to spend an evening. There’s even a great space available to hire for private functions, weddings, parties and corporate events.
