The entrance to The Shalimar revealed an airy conservatory bedecked with sofas. Here, diners are invited to take a seat for a pre-meal drink or wait in comfort for a takeaway.

Our waiters were extremely attentive, providing helpful advice on dishes and adapting them to suit our individual needs. You can choose from a selection of authentic Indian cuisine and unique house specialities, plus a wide variety of rice, vegetarian side dishes and naan bread. European meals, children's favourites and an exotic sweet menu are also available. We shared a platter of delicious meat and vegetarian starters which I followed with the chef's recommendation. The achari mazah special was a delicious amalgam of succulent lamb and a medium spicy sauce, which I enjoyed with a fluffy peshwari naan. My husband relished his sizzling shashlik chicken cooked in a proper tandoor oven, with vegetables coated in a tasty bhuna sauce and fragrant rice. Rich coconut ice cream, served in a coconut shell, completed a wonderful meal. Wines and beers from around the world, including Cobra and Kingfisher beers on tap, plus speciality coffees, are available to complement your meal.

You needn't take my word for the excellence of The Shalimar; it was recently awarded five stars for hygiene and Tripadvisor rates it the top restaurant in Matlock.
