This hidden Derbyshire gem, overlooking the pretty stone village of Calver, is ideal for a low-key lunch or a smart evening meal. Located in Hope Valley in the midst of the Peak District National Park, with an attractive terrace from which to survey the view, The Derwentwater Arms is a great place to enjoy satisfying fare whilst taking in the local sights.

Warmly welcomed by owner Martyn, we took in the smart open-plan layout, low ceilings and cosy ambience. From the comprehensive menu, which included both innovative dishes and old favourites, we chose tasty Thai crabcakes with sweet chilli sauce and a feather-light sundried tomato and Parmesan cheese soufflé. The array of main courses available, all made with quality ingredients from trusted local sources, ranged from classic Derbyshire fare such as Peak Ale and beef pie to feta cheese and red onion tart. Several vegetarian options and children's choices were also available. My companion opted for leek, celeriac and mushroom crumble - the vegetables enhanced by a delicate sauce - while I enjoyed herb-encrusted cod on a bed of celeriac and chorizo stew, which offered an unusual yet delicious balance of flavours. The dessert menu proved irresistible, so we finished with warm banana and pecan nut cake and a creme brulée - its white chocolate the perfect foil for the sharp, zesty raspberries. Finish off with a pint of fine cask ale and Bob's your uncle
