The Square, Bakewell, DE45 1BT
Conveniently situated in the main square, near the home of the Bakewell pudding, The Red Lion boasts all the features of a traditional country pub. Homemade pub favourites start at £8.95 and include beef and ale pie and scrumptious chilli, and diners can rest assured all dishes are cooked from local ingredients. A children's menu is available at £4.95 and, with several vegetarian options, a reasonably priced lunchtime menu and a specials blackboard, there is something for everyone. Real ale drinkers can try either Chatsworth Gold or Bakewell Best Bitter, both from local brewer Peak Ales.

I started with piping-hot nachos bathed in tasty melted cheese and served with a choice of dips, while my companion selected the prawn cocktail. The subtle Marie Rose sauce complemented the sweetness of the prawns, which were served with brown bread and a fresh salad. She followed this with vegetarian lasagne - Mediterranean vegetables in a creamy tomato sauce, with garlic bread and a side salad. My main course comprised thick, succulent chunks of salmon on a bed of crisp fresh vegetables, accompanied by a flavoursome leek and potato cake. The generous portions meant that we sadly didn't have room for the Bakewell pudding, rich chocolate fudge cake, ice cream or cheeseboard - certainly treats we'll enjoy on our next visit
