Independent, family-run restaurants are something of a rarity in today's food world, so The Lawns Hotel in Chellaston is a welcome change, offering the service and food that only such an establishment can provide. Tucked away off the quaint High Street in Chellaston village, The Lawn's elegant exterior is completed by the addition of a seating area fit for a summer's evening. The service is second to none, with courteous staff, an extensive menu and relaxed, elegant decor. The variety of fare is staggering, with dishes from the Mediterranean, England, Mexico and even a few Caribbean offerings. Expect ethically sourced meats, fresh ingredients and a wine list suitable to accompany all dishes.

To start we selected mixed olives and a Mediterranean vegetable tartlet; the pastry was sweet, and the vegetables cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of mozzarella. On to the main course - we ordered a Mediterranean vegetable pasta dish and a roasted walnut and pear salad which was accompanied by a few glasses of a recommended cabernet sauvignon. The salad was fresh and the taste of pear nicely complemented by the piquancy of creamy blue cheese. The pasta was substantially portioned, with chunky vegetables, and was very flavoursome indeed.

So whether you are after a quiet meal for two or a venue for a group celebration, The Lawns Hotel is the ideal choice
