Arriving on a windy evening, we were glad to step into the cosy bar at this characterful restaurant. Nibbling exquisite canapés, we took our time choosing from the range of traditional favourites listed on the extensive menu.

My hearty mushroom and Stilton gratin starter, wrapped in a pancake and served with Melba toast, was heavenly. My partner was equally impressed by the pan-fried Derbyshire four-cheese terrine served with oatcakes, peppery rocket salad and tangy red onion marmalade. Although tempted by the special of sea bass in lobster butter, I was ultimately swayed by the chargrilled fillet of beef, while my companion opted for the loin of wild boar. The beef was tender, the bacon-wrapped fine beans delightful, and the roasted carrots sweet and firm. A mushroom, peppercorn and wine sauce complemented everything masterfully. The succulent boar had a wonderful richness, enhanced by a piquant mustard and onion sauce. Desserts were a delectable warm treacle tart with whisky and ginger sauce and toffee ice cream, and a moreish pineapple and blueberry Eton Mess.

Offering top-level dishes without pretension, smart but cosy surroundings and friendly yet professional staff, The Old Post strikes an excellent balance. This is a recipe for enormous popularity, so book soon
