Husband-and-wife team John and Eve Bowtell took ownership of The Bradgate last autumn, with a view to establishing an easy-going drinking atmosphere and a home-from-home dining experience. This vision has been wonderfully realised at their Newtown pub (the only in the village), as John and Eve, themselves grandparents, successfully create a warm family-friendly environment for everyone to enjoy. There's a family dining area complete with highchairs and children's menus, and even your four-legged friends are welcome in the beautiful beer garden.

Both patrons pride themselves on excellent customer service with a personal touch, and you're more than likely to find them or their daughter Joanne serving on the bar or in the restaurant. Their quality kitchen team endeavour to satisfy your appetite with everything from traditional pub grub to more diverse dishes. Start yourself off with one of their homemade soups or maybe try their tantalising tiger prawns wrapped in filo pastry, served with Thai sweet chilli sauce. Then make your way to one of their magnificent mains; perhaps a traditional Beacon beer-battered haddock fillet s e rved with hand-cut chips, mushy peas, lemon and tartare sauce, or pork medallions and black pudding on a bed of mashed potato in brandy cream and peppercorn sauce, complemented by the vegetables of the day. For something a little different choose chargrilled halloumi and Mediterranean vegetables, drizzled with balsamic syrup and olive oil and served with hot buttered new potatoes. If you're struggling to settle on just one dish, I suggest you sample the buffet, which includes a selection of sandwiches, crudit's, gala pie, sausage rolls, samosas and tortillas - at £6 a head, it's also great value for money.

If you visit on a Sunday you're in for something special: whether it's the chef's own chicken liver paté with Cumberland sauce, freshly carved Aberdeen Angus roast topside of beef, or a cheeky cherry cheesecake. The Bradgate also caters for special occasions, so be sure to visit during the festive season and you'll be treated like one of the family.
