Chef-proprietor Chris Norfolk describes the multi-award-winning Elm Tree in Elmton as ‘a proper pub’. They’ve reached the finals of the Craft Guild of Chefs twice, which is unsurprising considering the locally sourced, quality food and drink on offer. This, combined with the large garden and attractive outdoor seating areas, mean that the pub gets busy during the fairer seasons. Inside, private dining rooms are available, dogs are more than welcome, and wood-burning stoves await chillier nights.

Chris and his team concentrate on creating traditional but innovative food, and some of the produce is grown by locals. Meat is sourced locally and butchered on-site to make traditional handmade pies and award-winning burgers. Even the dripping makes it onto the tables, served as a side dish with homemade bread. All the old favourites are there, including steak and chips, sausage and mash, roast rump of lamb and a mixed grill. All are very popular with regular locals and visitors alike.

We were delighted with our starters of goat’s cheese and beetroot cheesecake and smoked salmon fishcakes. To follow, I chose cod, pea and mint risotto with pancetta and Parmesan crisps, whilst my companion opted for the award-winning burger – a feast of flavours on a plate. Dessert took the form of homemade ice cream, mine with a ginger crème brûlée, and my partner’s with handmade chocolate cookies.
