Don't let the traditional facade of this Derbyshire pub deceive you - inside it is contemporary, newly refurbished and full of surprises. Unlike many gentrified gastropubs, The Royal Oak has not forgotten its loyal locals. With four cask ales on offer - including a locally brewed variety - and a large bar area with pool table and dartboard, regular drinkers don't miss out. The pub is split into three distinct parts: the second is bright and airy with comfortable seating and a sparkling bar; the third is a spectacular dining room with chandeliers, beautifully laid tables and a glorious sunroom.

The menu is extensive and much of the produce locally sourced. We started with fresh mackerel, which had been smoked in nearby Bolsover and was absolutely divine. My main course was a generous fillet of sea bass with sauce vierge on crushed potato - it was a light, tasty dish, complemented beautifully by a crisp chenin blanc from the excellent wine list. Across the table my partner tucked into juicy beef medallions with cider-braised red cabbage and sautéed potatoes. He made short work of the lot and declared it delicious. We finished with creamy homemade caramel cheesecake and a hearty slice of moist coffee and walnut gateau. This Tardis-like establishment, located just minutes from junction 30 of the M1, is a rare find. The people of Barlborough are a lucky bunch
