If you’re in Hungerford and you’re experiencing hunger pangs, settle the rumbling in your stomach with a visit to The Plume. One of the finest pubs in Berkshire in which to enjoy delicious British cuisine in stylish and comfortable surroundings, with Valentine’s Day on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to visit.

Nestled in the quaint market town of Hungerford and dating back to 1764, The Plume has recently undergone a modern and beautiful refurbishment by new owners Diggy and Fluey, who have both lived in Hungerford all their lives. Retaining many of the pub’s cosy and traditional features, the building now boasts a warm, modern and vibrant feel with its bay-fronted windows, traditional beams, and picturesque views overlooking the bustling town.

After a romantic stroll along the Kennet & Avon canal and a visit to the many boutiques and antique shops in the local area, fly over to The Plume and pluck out a few dishes from the restaurant’s mouth-watering tapas and small plates menu. Sample the likes of salt and pepper squid, sweet and spicy Spanish chorizo braised in a West Country cider, and crispy free-range chicken breast served in a romesco sauce. Diggy’s devilled chicken livers are also a highly popular choice – pan fried, tender, and pink on the inside, they are served in a rich mushroom and parsley sauce and accompanied by delectable toasted sourdough bread.

Making use of only the finest, locally sourced produce wherever possible, the à la carte menus are inspired by dishes around the world using seasonal British produce with meat and fish that is butchered, smoked, and prepared on site every day. Whether you’re craving the likes of hearty slow-cooked beef shin ragu served on pappardelle with Berkswell cheese, or the comforting bubble and squeak served with a poached duck egg speaks to you, there’s more than enough on the menu to keep even the fussiest of eaters satisfied. Vegetarians will love the fragrant and flavoursome Thai green curry, bursting with bamboo shoots, fines beans, peas, butternut squash and Thai basil and served with sticky jasmine rice and a poppadum.

This Valentine’s Weekend, enjoy a memorable two-course meal for 2 for just £50 per couple, which includes a complimentary bottle of house red or white wine. Sit in the stylish dining area and feast on the likes of mussels sautéed in garlic chilli and parsley to start, followed by mains such as the seafood linguine, pan-fried cod on a pea puree served with cocotte potatoes and pickled wild mushrooms, or 28-day dry-aged 8oz sirloin with field mushrooms, roasted vine tomatoes, house chips, and your choice of a peppercorn or Béarnaise sauce. Vegans will fall for the nutty cous cous stack, a dreamy mix of nuts, cous cous, layers of roasted red pepper and chargrilled zucchini, and a balsamic reduction. For just £6.50 more per person, add an extra course and treat yourself to an indulgent dessert like the fancy Champagne and strawberry cheesecake with pink meringue, or the melt-in-the-mouth chocolate fondant with clotted cream, raspberry ripple ice cream, and mixed berry coulis.
