30 North West Circus Place, Stockbridge, Edinburgh, EH3 6TP
Loved by locals and visitors alike thanks to its mouthwatering menu of exquisitely presented Mediterranean dishes, if you’re searching for a first-class festive dining experience in Edinburgh this year, you won’t find a place that will make you merrier than Merienda in Stockbridge.
Receiving high praise from numerous well-respected reviewers, you don’t have to just take our word for it. The reviews are so glowing in fact that that they could guide Santa’s sleigh on a foggy Christmas Eve – sorry Rudolph. Among these recommendations, Gaby Soutar from The Scotsman proclaimed the restaurant as having “the best looking food in Edinburgh”, Scottish Field remarked that the food was “achingly gorgeous, perfectly formed, delicious, fresh and seasonal”, and Little Black Book Edinburgh wrote that the restaurant offered a “great experience” and a “relaxed atmosphere”. The restaurant was also just awarded a Bib Gourmand by The Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2020.
Available for exclusive use for parties of around 20 people, Merienda is well-known across this cosmopolitan city for offering Edinburgh’s diners an authentic taste of the Mediterranean with a small plates menu that utilises the finest artisan Scottish produce and a tasting menu that you can design yourself. Managing to achieve the perfect balance between relaxed and fine dining, sit within the restaurant’s light and airy dining room as the soft stone and cream tones and gentle candlelight makes you feel all warm and cosy and peruse the special menu, providing you with an opportunity to sample vibrantly coloured dishes boasting a brilliant variety of rich flavours and textures that will send your tastebuds shooting down to sunnier climates.
Placing provenance at the heart of their menu which includes up to thirty dishes that taste just as good as they look, Merienda has built up a respectable working relationship with a number of local producers and artisan suppliers, including a smokehouse in the Hebrides and individual cheesemaking farms. Their sumptuous white, rosé, and red wines are also sourced from small growers around the Mediterranean and are hand-picked to complement the small plates on the menu. Along with the wine, Merienda also boasts a list of purely Scottish craft beers, a large selection of high-end and pre-dominantly Scottish-sourced spirits, and even an incredibly rare whisky.
Changing monthly to make use of the finest seasonal Scottish produce, the menu is based around 5 sections: Staples, Fields & Gardens, Rivers & Seas, Farms & Pastures and Sweetness. For the full tasting experience, Merienda recommends each diner selects 7 plates from the menu. A typical meal at Merienda might include tasty staples like sundried tomato focaccia and bresaola with dressed artichoke hearts, herb-crusted lamb with confit ratatouille and red wine jus from the farms and pastures section, goat’s cheese mousse with salted walnuts, roast beetroot and tarragon emulsion from the fields and gardens section, beautiful Tobermory oak-smoked trout with scorched cucumber and gel and a spiced crème fraîche from the rivers and seas section, and indulgent desserts like rhubarb Pavlova and rice pudding with white peach.
