Every foodie’s favourite time of the year, when we think of Christmas it’s the food and drink that excites us more than the presents under the Christmas tree (unless of course its a big Christmas hamper). But it’s not just Christmas dinner or Boxing Day lunch we’re looking forward to; the month of December is just jam-packed with exciting foodie festivities taking place across the country to get tucked into.
Whether you’re looking for an elegant Christmas meal in a fancy London hotel, a late night event celebrating cheese, a vegan Christmas market, or a cosy place to watch your favourite Christmas movies and enjoy a brunch and bottomless bubbles, London has so many special food and drink events taking place this December that by the start of the new year, you’ll have a round belly that shakes when you laugh like a bowl full of jelly – just like Santa.

From November 26th to January 4th, Narnia is escaping through the wardrobe and flooding St Martins Lane Hotel with its winter wonderland magic. Situated in the heart of Covent Garden, you’ll be all swept up in Christmas charm as soon as you step through the doors. Inside the hotel lobby you’ll find a forest filled with fallen snow, glistening birches and crystallised snowflakes, along with faux fur rugs and throws that will provide you with refuge from the White Witch’s icy spell. The British chocolatiers Rococo have lined the walls with tempting Turkish Delights and will offer delicious festive chocolate bars flavoured with Christmas pudding, mulled wine, and cinnamon spice.

This December 12th from 6pm to 9pm, Borough Market will be hosting its annual late-night event, “An Evening of Cheese” – after all, what would a proper Christmas feast or boxing day lunch be without a fantastic festive cheeseboard!? This hugely popular event will allow guests the opportunity to chat with more than 20 of Borough Market’s cheesemongers and get recommendations on how to make your cheeseboards extra special this Christmas time. They’ll also be a festive cheese-baking cooking demonstration in the glass-fronted Market Hall’s Demo Kitchen, as well as a competition where traders will compete head-to-head with Italians stallholder Bianca e Mora in the ‘cracking of the parmesan wheel”.

This December 8th from 11am to 6pm, Deptford Bites at Christmas will be bringing some festive foodie fun to Deptford Market Yard. A proper celebration of all of our favourite festive things, expect tons of mouth-watering street food, delicious desserts, boozy drinks, fresh produce, and stunning stalls where you’ll be able to purchase some charming handcrafted pressies from local makers and designers. Pick up a vegan hot dog from Nooch, superb seafood from Da Fish Ting, or excellent Indonesian cuisine from Kaki Lima. There’ll also be carol singers, live music, craft workshops, and their very own Santa’s Grotto/Arch.
December 8th – Deptford Market Yard, SE8 4BX
A three-floor popular youth hangout for adults, The Exhibit in Balham is putting on a series of fantastic ‘boozical brunches” this year set to your favourite Christmas films. On Saturday 15th December, head to The Exhibit and get ready for a good sing song and cry with Michael Caine and Kermit as you sit down with the Christmas classic “The Muppets Christmas Carol” and enjoy bottomless bubbles with a delicious brunch. If for some reason the best Christmas film of all time doesn’t do it for you, they are even hosting a “Greatest Showman Boozical Brunch”, as well as screenings of “Miracle on 34th Street” and a screening of “Elf” in their ski lodge area.

Opening its first ever pop-up on New Quebec Street from December 3rd to December 17th (closed on December 10th), Marylebone Gin is offering guests the opportunity to try a tempting selection of cocktails and take part in a dynamic range of masterclasses. If you’re tired of the traditional Christmas beverages but still want a boozy Christmas, you need to pop along to this pop-up celebrating great gin.

Christmas may be famous for its turkey, pigs in blankets, and pork stuffing, but that needn’t mean it has to be a miserable foodie occasion for vegans. This Saturday 8th December from 12pm to 10pm, Vegan Route is coming to Blue House Yard’s iconic market space bringing its brilliant and must-visit Vegan Christmas Market where they’ll be chalets selling all kinds of gifts and treats and street food traders offering a warming selection of tasty winter dishes. Food stalls in attendance include The Green Grill with their colourful burger and dawgs, Oh My Gulay! with their Filipino winter bowls, Shakey Shakey with their delicious tofish and chips and the cracking cookie supplier, Kizzy’s Vegan Cookies.

Maltby Street Christmas Night Market brings the warmth every Friday in December from 4pm to 9.30pm with an exciting choice of gourmet street food stalls, bars, and fresh produce. If you’re looking for some festive treats or warming mulled wine, this fantastic market is a must-visit. Situated beneath Bermondsey’s railway arches, this night market will run up to Christmas and get you in the holiday spirit with carol singers and festive foods from across the globe.
December 7th, 14th and 21st – Rope Walk, SE1 3PA
This December 12th, award-winning sandwich masters Sub Cult will be putting on a nostalgic 90s-themed shindig to celebrate its move to Boxpark Shoreditch. Come on down and enjoy one of the 350 free sliders inspired by this confused and colourful decade like the “Piggy Smalls”, a sub filled with slow-roast pork shoulder, crackling, apple sauce, and sage mayo, or the “Cyprus Grill” with grilled halloumi, grilled peppers, herbed yoghurt and crispy onion. There will also be DJs playing 90s hip-hop, soul, dance and Britpop, along with an exhibition from legendary subculture artist Gavin Watson exhibiting his rave archive photography and selling signed copies of his book, “Raving 89’”. All sales of their “Watson Sub” will also be donated to Aslan, a local charity that serves the homeless.

Served in One Aldwych’s Indigo and The Lobby Bar from Monday 19th November until Monday 31st December, get in the Christmas spirit with a magical afternoon tea with a merry, festive twist. Featuring mulled wine with jelly custard and golden eggs, gingerbread and white chocolate cake pops, cinnamon glazed brioche, and a tempting choice of sweet and savoury treats inspired by a sweetshop, One Aldwych captures the spirit in one sophisticated, elegant and luxurious setting.
