Opening November 30th, R.P. Culley & Co Bar & Restaurant at The Exchange Hotel promises to provide visitors with an unforgettable dining experience, blending together the forgotten and fascinating history of the lovingly refurbished and magnificent Exchange Hotel with an exciting and imaginative selection of modern British dishes using the finest seasonal, regional produce available.

Situated within the impressive and imposing Exchange Hotel in Cardiff, which was once home to the capital’s thriving 19th-century coal exchange, every inch of this building has its own story to tell, and now the hotel is set to tell another tale with the opening of this truly special restaurant.

From the outside, you’ll be stunned by the magnificence of the building’s beautiful gothic façade; there really are few hotels in the city as breathtaking. Step inside and be welcomed by the interior’s wooden panelling and touches that reflect the building’s industrial heritage. Grand and luxurious whilst still managing to be unpretentious, comforting and fun, dining at R.P. Culley & Co Bar & Restaurant promises to be a joyous experience for each and every guest.

Passionate about quality local produce, talented head chef Keith Clash has created a mouth-watering new menu that simply must be tried. Dishes like the tempting pan-seared duck breast, slow-cooked pork belly, and Abergavenny lamb rack are guaranteed to please the foodies out there, whilst the menu also includes classics that will keep everyone happy like Culley’s fish and chips served with peas, tartar sauce and lemon, and Cefn Mawr 6oz burger in a seeded bun with streaky bacon and tifi rarebit.

When we visited the restaurant earlier this month, we were lucky enough to be treated to some of the sensational dishes that await diners when R.P. Culley & Co Bar & Restaurant opens at the end of November. To start, we tucked into Welsh mussels in smoked garlic and chilli cream, salad with sweet potato, smokey cauliflower and avocado, and seared scallops with roasted spices accompanied by the subtle sweetness of strewn pomegranate seeds, and were blown away by the kitchen team’s ability to elevate humble ingredients with flair and attention to detail. Then, we savoured scrumptious mains of British chicken breast served with tarragon mash, wild mushroom and pancetta and brandy sauce, and Welsh rack of lamb, before finishing with the melt-in-the-mouth bara brith bread and butter pudding with rum-soaked raisins and the dreamy Wickedly Welsh chocolate tasting plate – every chocoholic’s fantasy.

Taking its name from, and inspired by, local philanthropist and entrepreneur Richard Palethorpe Culley, an iconic figure in Cardiff who secured a catering contract with the Coal Exchange to work in the lavish Coal Exchange Restaurant and rub shoulders with the Welsh coal industry’s self-made millionaires and influential guests, this venue aims to live up to his legendary charisma, and from everything we’ve seen so far, it certainly does that.
