Some careers involve real hardships: early morning winter deliveries, giving bad news to patients, handling unpleasant customers. The world of food writing is also full of peril… oh no wait, it’s blooming fabulous. Last week we were invited to Zerodegrees in Bristol to try out their festive food menu, and learn a bit more about what makes this foodie microbrewery an excellent choice for Christmas parties big or small – such a hardship.

Every Zerodegrees site is spacious enough to accommodate large groups, though there are plenty of cosy corners for smaller get-togethers. During December, the party atmosphere is palpable – at 8pm the DJ starts, and by 9pm when the food is finished, tables are cleared away downstairs to make room for the dance floor, the place to be. We took a sneak peak at the Bristol site, but our sources have confirmed that the same party vibe is present at every Zerodegrees.

The Bristol site boasts an excellent mezzanine level overlooking the main restaurant and the microbrewery pumps, with room for up to 100 revellers. It’s the perfect spot for companies who want to start the evening with an air of exclusivity before joining the masses in the revelry later in the evening. If you prefer to be in the thick of it, you’ll find tables of up to 50 diners getting into the festive spirit, and there’s also the option of hosting your own private party – just gather 500 of your nearest and dearest.

The festive menu is a cut above; we sampled the full range of starters and mains and were truly impressed with the freshness, the full flavours and the quality of the dishes. Traditionalists can look forward to starters of soup or pâté with a main course of turkey roulade, while those looking for something to warm the cockles might start with prawn and black pudding gumbo before moving on to a main course of lamb with Christmas spices. If you’re not in the mood for a festive feast, there are 25 oven-fired pizzas to choose from, all made with the brewery’s own yeast.

There are vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options galore; the kitchen team really emphasises their flexibility and willingness to ensure that everyone is catered for, so dishes can be adapted as required, whether that’s switching a pizza base to a GF option or removing the nuts from a dish.

The DJ performs every night in December so whenever you choose to celebrate Christmas, you’re in for a real treat. If you book before the end of October, everyone in your party will receive a free glass of premium Prosecco on arrival – combine that with the excellent foodie offering, party atmosphere and stunning craft brews, and you’ve got everything you need for a top-notch shindig; it’s like a grown-ups’ Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
