The Freakshake has been taking the world by storm since it shot to social media fame. These over-indulgent desserts originated out of Patissez in Canberra back in 2015, and within months had made their way over to the happening-hub of Dalston – before taking conquest across the UK’s most metropolitan areas (and, somehow, Bangor in North Wales). But just what is it, you ask? Fear not, intrepid food-explorer – Fed up and Drunk are here to show off our favourite examples of this most unhinged of dessert-drinks, before giving away a top-secret recipe so that you can get inventive with your own at home.
But let’s not get carried away too soon. First, ladies and gentlemen, I give you – The Freakshake!
The instigator of the British Freakshake, Molly Bakes continue to come up with some of the most Instagram-infamous creations of these freaky shakes. With chocolate, peanut butter, raspberry and caramel all available, Molly Bakes’ freakshakes walk that fine line between the somehow artistic and the wholly outlandish.
Up in North Wales we have the newest kid on our freakshake block tour. Freak Shakes has been open now for just under a year and has received a great reception thanks to its creative approach, giving us flavours such as strawberry fudge and lemon meringue. With the option to add your own toppings to this overladen drink, it’s hard not to imagine yourself going totally overboard.
Back to London, and Covent Garden. Maxwell’s has long had a reputation for the excessive and the impressive, and was quick to introduce the freakshake to its menu once the craze was underway. Think strawberry, banana and chocolate freakshakes all piled high with fruit, chocolate and a healthy double serving of double cream.
It was only a matter of time until Bristol fell to the freakshake too, and The Beehive Coffee House have started it. Look out for the ever-varying Freak of the Week shake, where the team use their artistic madness to great ends. Hot chocolate with lucky charms, brownie bites, marshmallows and cream, anyone?
Patissez is the only café in the world that can actually boast to be the home of the original freakshake. Unleashing this monstrous creation on the world back in 2015, the team behind Canberra’s most recent invention had no idea that six months down the line they’d be trademarking the name and spawning a worldwide trend.
The Oreo Freakshake
Despite the way these desserts may look intensely complicated, we had a huge amount of fun making our own freakshakes in the office. Why not make your own milkshake at home, using a milkshake maker such as this (my favourite piece of office equipment). Take a look at this recipe inspired by Laci Carlson at Sequins in the South, while the original is available here in full.
2/3 scoops of cookie and cream ice cream
A small jug of chocolate icing (or Nutella)
1 container of chocolate fudge sauce
250ml whole milk
1 cookies and cream chocolate bar
1 pack of Oreos
1 can of whipped cream
Using a milkshake machine or a blender, add in the ice cream and milk and blend until smooth.
Place into freezer while you prep the glass.
Using the chocolate icing / Nutella, take a knife or your finger, and coat the outer rim of the glass in frosting.
Place a few oreos into a ziplock bag and crush them.
Roll the glass into the crushed Oreos
Using the chocolate fudge, drizzle the inside of the glass and then add in the ice cream.
Top with whipped cream, chocolate bar and Oreos.
Drizzle with chocolate fudge and enjoy.
Don’t be afraid to get creative with toppings and flavours too, after all that’s exactly where the freakshake came from. We’ve found plenty of examples of fruity shakes, of simple milkshakes, and even vegan freakshakes such as the one below (from the canvas café, who do a full range of vegan treats) – all of which can be made with nothing more than the milkshake maker.
