With two AA rosettes under its belt, this chic modern British establishment boasts a stylish interior as well as first-rate cuisine. The seasonally changing menus, designed by executive head chef Adam Potten are simple and honest, with every effort made to course quality produce from local suppliers. The William Bray
The William Bray has put the pretty village of Shere on the map in more ways than one. With new owners and a recent complete refurbishment, this iconic Surrey pub receives an abundance of praise from its diners. Apart from the many well-known visitors, including George Clooney and Tom Cruise, The William Bray is first and foremost known for its quality food and drink. An award-winning venue, The William Bray is also a ‘Diner’s Choice Winner’ as chosen by Open Table. Seasonal menus offer an eclectic range of British classics with locally sourced produce. The pub boasts a cosy atmosphere in winter, while during the summer visitors are invited to dine al fresco on the spacious terrace. If you are considering holding a private function the private dining room can seat up to 14.
At The Oak Room, one of the two restaurants in residency at Woodlands Park Hotel – the other being Bensons Restaurant – guests can expect a truly beguiling setting for sophisticated dining. Think sparkling chandeliers, ornate oak-panelled walls, elegant upholstery, gleaming candlesticks and majestic floral displays. Executive head chef Andrew Mackenzie is sure to impress with his tantalising new six-course taster menu – expect the likes of fillet of John Dory served with courgette flowers amply filled with salt cod brandade and lobster cream, drizzled in rich cuttlefish sauce, and melt-in-the-mouth beef fillet sourced from Surrey butcher S. Set in the picturesque village of Mickleham, this recently refurbished 16th-century country inn oozes olde-world English charm and class. Enter via the cosy bar and head to the expansive wood-panelled dining area, taking a seat in one of the comfortable and stylish booths. The menu features a well-thought out selection of tempting dishes. Think starters of wood pigeon Wellington with hot pickled red cabbage, and mains like pan-fried whole lemon sole with watercress, new potatoes, lime and grapes. If you’re just popping in for a drink you’re in for a treat. Try one of the smooth ales, or select from the impressive wine list. If you find you want to stay a while, make use of one of the five luxury, en-suite rooms upstairs or the one bedroom cottage, 50 meters from the pub.
A fine French restaurant and handsome Parisian-style salon, Le Salon Privé offers an elegant and exceptional dining experience. Attractively decorated with velvet-lined banquettes and stained glass, the sophisticated interior inspires relaxation and complements the superb service and gastronomic creations of head chef, Gianluca di Monaco. Expect starters such as delectable duck rillettes served with asparagus and fig chutney, and mains of fine roasted lamb rump with aubergine caviar and tomato confit with anchovy sauce. There is a panelled room which seats six to eight comfortably, perfect for a family get-together.
Country manor house Worplesdon Place has been an iconic landmark at the heart of the pretty village of Worplesdon since the 19th century. The answer is The Squirrel Inn, a bespoke, independent venue that successfully fuses fi ne dining and traditional dishes. Ideally located off the A3 just six miles from Guildford, this recently refurbished gem has been gaining a well-earned reputation for excellence. Attention to detail is key at The Squirrel and nothing is left to chance, with all produce sourced locally and everything homemade, from the bread to the ice cream. The passionate and talented kitchen team, headed by Tim Bridle, works to create an impressive menu that changes weekly. Packed with exciting and innovative dishes, the menu caters for the casual diner as well as for more formal occasions.
With an enviable location in the centre of Wonersh, the two-AA-rosette-awarded Grantley Arms is a modern British establishment par excellence, blending outstanding cuisine with an unpretentious, traditional pub ambience. In the restaurant, wooden wall panelling, splashes of exposed brickwork, original oak beams, modern-rustic chandeliers and a neutral palette create a tranquil environment for dining. Here, reasonably priced two- and three-course à la carte menus are the order of the day. All produce is locally sourced and dishes are seasonally inspired and imaginatively crafted. The bar remains a more informal space, although The Grantley Arms can arrange private dining for a cover of up to 20 guests – it’s the perfect place to while away a memorable evening with friends, family or colleagues.
