Occupying a prime spot on the College Green is the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel. It’s a grand building with a beautiful façade, elegant decor and an atmospheric restaurant.

Enabling visitors to make the most of the warmer weather, the hotel recently opened its terrace – Walter’s on the Square. It’s an informal and relaxed space, with plenty of seating and a menu comprising of West Country tapas, intriguing cocktail blends and a selection of ale from local breweries. In celebration of the opening of this stylish area, an exclusive event was held, to which we were cordially invited. Bespoke cocktails, delicious tapas and an intimate setting? We could hardly say no.

The evening began with a complimentary glass of Prosecco, and a red carpet leading us to the beautiful area. The atmosphere was buzzing, with visitors full of compliments for the terrace, the views of the neighbouring cathedral and the tasty nibbles and tipples being delivered by the smiling waiters.

We joined the throngs, and before long found ourselves rather inundated with tasters from the menu of locally sourced fare.

A selection of cocktails also made their way to our group

Everyone was full of kind words for the food and drinks being delivered:

Rob – I had a great time at Walter’s and the service was top-notch. My favourite cocktail was the refreshing basil, gin and bitter lemon – the perfect start to a lovely evening. I couldn’t resist any of the nibbles, and my favourites were definitely the beautifully cooked chorizo bites and the sweet-chilli chicken skewers.

Joele – I have to confess the Grape Escape cocktail was my favourite tipple of the evening and the drink of my dreams! A delicious, tantalising mix of white rum, grapes and elderflower cordial with ginger ale, it was like summer in a mason jar – and like the season itself, I didn’t want it to end.

Alex – Enjoying a smile-inducing rum concoction from the bar, I could easily envision Walter’s on the Square becoming the go-to haunt for weekend cocktail fans and post-work revelers – I just know it! Quaffable drinks, moreish nibbles and a central location are a guaranteed winning formula.

Lucy – I’m not normally a fan of gin or of drinks that involve herbs, so I was completely bowled over by the delicious gin and basil cocktail – so subtle, sophisticated and refreshing. I was also impressed by the variety and generosity of the nibbles that came with the drinks. And I loved the accompanying little bamboo cocktail sticks with the curly handles – much more elegant than the toothpick variety.

Holly – The opening night of Walter’s on the Square gave us a great taste of things to come. This is definitely somewhere I’ll head to on a summer evening for post-work drinks – entering the patio area, I felt transported to a European café. The canapés served fit this theme; deliciously tender prawns in sweet, spicy sauce, and rich beetroot with crumbly goat’s cheese and pomegranate seeds for extra summer zest.

Set to be open every evening and all day Friday to Sunday, we have no doubt that this will become the go-to place for al fresco dining and drinks.
