Whether you’re fortunate enough to have the day after your work Christmas party off or will be slumped at your desk come 9am, if spirits have been high the night before, chances are you’re in for a rough few hours. Here are a few tips to help you stay bright eyed and bushy tailed even after one too many glasses of eggnog.
Before you drink
Pearfect Party Prep
Make sure you line your stomach – drinking on an empty tummy never ends well. The best foods are full of natural good fats, like avocado and salmon, so if you’re doing pre-party snacks, include some smoked salmon blinis and fresh guacamole with crudités. Studies have also shown that hangovers are reduced by up to 20% by tucking into Korean pears before a boozy night. If you’re making juice, aim to consume at least 220ml for the best benefits.
The morning after
Slurp a vitamin-rich smoothie to ease your suffering. Our favourite fresh fix calls for 250g Greek yoghurt, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1 tbsp coconut oil, a small banana, 35g frozen kale, 50g blueberries, 250ml coconut water and a splash of honey. Blitz it all together in a blender with a few ice cubes and you’ll feel revitalised in no time.
Ultimate Hangover Breakfast
Vitamin B-rich wholegrains are some of the best things to help your body battle a hangover, so wholegrain toast should be the foundation that you build your hero breakfast on. Top the toast with poached eggs (full of cysteine, which is what your body uses to counteract hangovers), grilled tomatoes (bursting with vitamin C) and mushrooms (a tasty source of vitamins B and D). Round this all off with a glass of apple or cranberry juice – fresh fruit juice is the perfect antidote to those morningafter sugar cravings. If you can’t face such a full plate, nibble on a slice of wholegrain toast slathered in potassium- and anti-oxidant-rich honey.
Most importantly, make sure you have fun at your Christmas party, but don’t overdo it – come January 4th, you’ll be back in the office, having to face your co-workers…
