Great places to eat and drink in Cardiff on any budget…
Whatever the occasion, dining out in Cardiff is always a treat. But certain occasions dictate certain budgets: you wouldn’t want to be given a six course taster menu if you were out for a midweek bite after work, and likewise you probably wouldn’t want to be handed some squeezy mustard on an anniversary meal.
We had a look at some of our favourite restaurants in Cardiff and gave them the save or splurge treatment to help you make the right choice.
Splurge: Set in a grand traditional Grade 1 listed building, Park House is one of Cardiff’s gems. Head Chef Jonathan Edward’s cooking is distinctly modern and pushes the limits of Welsh culinary standards. Alongside Michelin Star Consultant Chef, Roger Jones, they have created some incredible dishes and seasonal menus that set them apart from many others in the area.
Splurge: There’s no doubting the passion and dedication at ‘The Bunch’ as their fondly referred to by locals. They brew their own beers, bake their own bread every morning and create unique seasonal dishes, with an emphasis on locally sourced, sustainable and seasonally fresh ingredients.
You’ll feel as comfortable having a beer and burger as you will some fine wine and a three course meal.
Splurge: Open to both residents and the public, Holm House Hotel caters for any occasion. Head to the Tea Room for afternoon tea, chill out in the Snug bar with a wine, beer of coffee or indulge in the a la carte menu in The Restaurant.
Head chef James Milward creates daily menus using fresh, locally sourced ingredients that can be enjoyed with a view of their beautiful cliff top gardens.
Save: Hogwurst is a super casual yet super tasty hotdog restaurant. They’ve teamed up with expert charcuterers, Native Breeds, of Gloucester, plus local bakers, Allens, to produce some awesome and really interesting hotdog creations. Oh, and its BYO.
Splurge: Butterflies is a fantastic gastropub situated in the World Heritage Town of Blaenavon. They have two restaurant areas; the garden restaurant is a contemporary room with oak furniture and leather chairs and views out to the patio. Their menu offers some traditional homemade classics and À la carte dishes.
Save: Offering many classic Indian dishes as well as a selection of their dishes, Purple Mint is one of Cardiff’s newest Indian restaurants. From tandoori to tikka, Purple Mint will see you right.
Save: If you’re looking for great pub food then look no further; North Star is a proper pub that serves some seriously good pub-grub classics. As you’d expect, the ale options are plentiful and the atmosphere is relaxed – it’s everything you’d expect and more.
