Fine dining, farm shops and proper pubs, Berkshire’s got the lot…
It’s a pretty big place, Berkshire – and a stunning place at that! With Windsor Castle, romantic countryside, Ascot Racecourse and dozens of beautiful gardens it’s easy to forget how close you are to London. Not only that, but the area boasts some of the finest dining in the country, some amazing farm shops and restaurants and some gorgeous British pubs with class menus.
Here’s a rundown of some of our favourite places to dine in Berkshire…
The only ‘proper pub’ on the river in Windsor, The Boatman is great in so many ways: the views, the location, the food and the lovely terrace area. Situation on the River Thames and over looking Eton bridge, this is one of our favourite places to eat and drink in the whole of Berkshire.
Reading’s only Michelin-starred restaurant, L’Ortolan is another Fed Up & Drunk Favourite. Their recently appointed head chef, Tom Clarke, has had a huge impact on the restaurant with his contemporary menu going from strength to strength.
Oakley House is a stunning hotel on the River Thames, Windsor. From their extremely popular Afternoon Tea experiences in the Drawing Room to a romantic table for two in our Dining Room Restaurant, they have a number of different experiences available. Their head chef Damian Broom creates simple and exciting classic dishes that always impress.
On a completely different scale to the above, Tutti Pole is a relaxed and informal cafe, cake shop and restaurant. We love it for its variety and the fact that you can go for anything from a cake and cup of tea to a full three course meal.
Cobbs Farm Shop is a fully licensed cafe and delicatessen that serves fresh, homegrown or locally sourced produce. There’s everything you’d expect on a farm shop menu, with delicious breakfasts, lunches and some classic British mains on offer.
The Swan at Streatley is a stunning hotel and restaurant on the Thames; with beautiful views over the river, seasonal menus, boat hire and facilities for children, it’s got the lot! It also boasts a casual deli and cafe and a spa and treatment room, so you could even make a weekend of it!
El Sabio is a gorgeous tapas bar and restaurant in Winchester. Owner and head chef, Attila
Vanko, has created a unique and enviable atmosphere that is replicated by their changing menu. The outside seating is a lovely addition during the summer for a cheeky sangria.
Meimos Restaurant in Windsor has an extensive menu that covers almost every type of Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine, but with a real local feel to it! With dishes such as lamb and chicken tagine with exotic fruits and spices, home made flat breads, rice dishes and traditional cous-cous recipes, it’s a firm favourite in the area and always busy.
As far as ‘proper pubs’ go, they don’t get much more ‘proper’ than The Tally Ho. With the exposed brick interior, low ceiling and original beams it’s as British as they come, and that’s why we love it. Their menu is classic pub grub, great for lunch, dinner or a weekend light bite.
