Retaining its Michelin star for a fourth year, The New Angel Restaurant and Rooms continues to be recognised for its fine cuisine. A full refurbishment has enhanced the half-timber Tudor building in its picturesque waterfront position in Dartmouth. Executive chef John Burton-Race (chef profile page 63) returns with his team to produce exquisite food. John's philosophy is to take the best seasonal and local produce that Devon has to offer and serve it in a simple fashion with professional and cheerful service.

The kitchen is on full view, so you can see the chefs preparing the fabulous cuisine. Downstairs is lively and entertaining, while in the upstairs dining room the feel is more intimate and sophisticated. On the second floor there is a decadent cocktail lounge, which boasts stunning views across the water.

The menu at The New Angel is prepared daily and features a wonderful selection of dishes, created using the freshest ingredients from the local and surrounding areas. Expect the finest fish crafted into such delights as a starter salad of pan-fried Beesands scallops with Puy lentils and smoked bacon; or a main-course dish of roasted fillet of North Devon cod with tempura prawn, pak choi and a light chicken juice infused with soya. Local meat is showcased in dishes such as ham hock and foie gras terrine with piccalilli, and saddle of Exmoor venison with braised red cabbage and peppercorn sauce.

Desserts are as seductive as the Devon setting, with such delights as chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream, and caramelised ginger pear with lime sorbet. If your tooth is less than sweet then sample the selection of local and French cheeses with homemade biscuits, which are simply sensational. Complementing the menu is an extensive wine list featuring beautiful wines from both France and the New World.
