Nr. Thornhill
Craigdarroch Arms Hotel
Enjoying an enchanting situation, among some of the most stunning countryside in south Scotland, is the village of Moniaive. The Craigdarroch Arms Hotel, situated on Moniaive’s narrow main street, has a fittingly quaint and cosy feel. It might have something to do with the log fire burning brightly in the bar – a welcome sight on cold Scottish nights. Chef Robert McAleese specialises in seafood, and the selection of fresh haddock, salmon, lobster, langoustine and prawns on offer is quite a hit with just about everyone who has ever dined here. Palate-enticing dishes include starters of lime-and-chilli-cured salmon with creme fraiche, and pan-fried mushrooms in a garlic, cream, white wine and herb sauce. After that, tuck into the splendid pan-fried pork fillet with blue cheese sauce served with crispy Parma ham, or a tender fillet steak with all the trimmings. Homemade desserts are also on offer – if you have room, that is.
