St Albans
Darcys
Darcys is an innovative, award-winning restaurant in the historic cathedral and market town of St Albans. Australian chef and owner Ruth Hurren and head chef David Christie specialise in modern European cuisine, but draw culinary inspiration from various regions around the Pacific Rim.
The team at Darcys pride themselves on the fresh, quality produce they use – much of which is sourced locally. The menus are designed to suit a variety of tastes whilst providing a challenge for adventurous diners – in fact, Darcys has become well-known for its kangaroo dishes. You’ll find a comprehensive wine list featuring both Old and New World labels that are perfectly matched with the menus, and there’s a great selection of cocktails, including non-alcoholic concoctions. Why not relax in the exclusive lounge bar and sip on one of their renowned Mojitos while you peruse the menu?
Based in an impressive former blacksmith’s workshop, Darcys boasts three unique dining rooms and a courtyard for alfresco dining. On offer are à la carte and monthly set menus, a fixed-priced Sunday lunch and a children’s selection – the fare is unique and exciting, giving the diner a genuine opportunity to try something new. But take note: it is highly recommended you reserve a table, particularly for Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch.
From the seasonal à la carte menu, perhaps start with prosciutto, mozzarella and fresh peach with an aged balsamic, or maybe the Cornish crab tian with mango, avocado and pomegranate salsa. Next, why not opt for tender seared duck breast and pressed leg with pistachio, red-cabbage slaw and roasted pear – perfect followed by the sticky banana pudding with banana smoothie and caramel sauce, or a decadent dessert cocktail. Vegetarians need not feel left out either, with exquisite starters like grilled figs and mascarpone with blood orange and white balsamic dressing and intriguing mains with names like Wobbly Bottom – goat’s cheese tart with honey and beetroot syrup.
Darcys has been a key player on the St Albans restaurant scene for nine years; having once again secured a place in The Good Food Guide, it remains as popular as ever. No wonder – from start to finish, the dining experience here is a revelation.
