There has been a hotel on the spot where South Sands sits since the 1950s, but it hasn’t always been the thriving business it is today – in fact, before its reopening in 2010, it had been closed for eight years. It took no time at all for the new and improved South Sands to build a loyal following, however, thanks to its stylish, contemporary decor, well-appointed guest rooms (including beach suite apartment-style rooms that are ideal for families), first-rate service and, of course, its glorious views of the beach. Its terrace is a particularly popular spot in the summer; hotel guests, locals and day-trippers (along with their four-legged companions) flock here to bask in the sunshine and enjoy some fine fare.
South Sands’ aptly named Beachside Restaurant boasts a panoramic beach vista that’s stunning all year round – in winter, guests can gaze out upon stormy seas while cosseted in the cosy restaurant, while in summer, sunbathers fi ll the beach, the water glistens in the sunlight and the restaurant has a laid-back Mediterranean vibe. It’s also a special spot to celebrate, and the culinary team can capably cater for functions of all sizes. The menus feature modern British fare from the land and sea, and the chefs ensure they take advantage of the fantastic producers on their doorstep as much as possible. A meal here might begin with short-rib corned beef with kohlrabi coleslaw and focaccia, followed by a signature dish of River Exe mussels served marinière style with homemade granary bread.
