The Hercules Inn brings to life that daydream of delicious countryside dining that we’ve all had, with a decidedly modern touch bringing style and flair to Sutton Cheney. Open fireplaces and hardwood floors create a charming ambience, yet the stylish fixtures, modern sculptures and contemporary English menus place the whole atmosphere firmly in the 21st Century.

Tucked away down a quiet country lane, The Hercules is set within tranquil surroundings and boasts beautiful views. The courteous staff will attend to you at your table as you choose from the carefully prepared menu, created with the inimitable style and skill of head chef Luke Finne (chef profile page 51). The menu also features a list of suppliers, most of them local, so you can find out with confidence exactly where your food has come from.

To kick off the evening, the deli boards are an excellent choice, providing the chance to try a little of everything. The mixed board includes portions of crayfish, Brie and Cheddar, sardines and Parma ham, s e rved with rustic bread and three different chutneys. Main meals include sea bream with beetroot crisps, caper butter and leek mash, or local rare-breed pork loin s e rved with sweetcorn fritters, caramelised baby gem and gazpacho. The impressive rump cap steak is also not to be missed – a thick and succulent cut served with mashed potato, wild mushroom fricasee and jus. You simply have to save room for dessert at The Hercules. The treats on offer include pannacotta and raspberry trifle with almond tuilles and a cherry plum jalousie, served with homemade vanilla and white-chocolate ice cream. There is also a luxurious selection of homemade chocolate truffles, one of which (the strawberry vodka) won ‘Best Flavour’ in 2009’s Taste Awards. The Hercules also sells these delicious little pieces of heaven in boxes of six to take home.

With its superb presentation, beautifully relaxed atmosphere and excellent chef working away in the kitchen, The Hercules offers a truly decadent dining experience – one that you’ll want to revisit again and again.
