Relaxed country charm and a warm welcome await you at the Woolpack in St Georges. Locals and visitors alike have long found this award-winning Butcombe Brewery inn the perfect retreat for a meal for two or dinner with friends.

With its wooden beams, brass fittings and countryside prints throughout, the pub has a calming rural feel despite its handy location close to Weston-super-Mare. There’s a separate bar area and secluded outside patio – great for an alfresco pint in summer – while the restaurant itself is spacious and inviting.

Locally-sourced ingredients are used to produce an extensive, likeable menu, which specialises in value-for-money dishes, and features favourite classic fare. The Woolpack platter is the perfect sharing plate – a bountiful starter including goodies such as southern-fried chicken, garlic mushrooms, scampi and potato skins. Or consider a speciality main such as Butcombe battered cod – dipped in beer for a subtle hop-flavoured edge, it is fried to golden brown perfection and served with fantastic chunky chips – the epitome of a seaside favourite. A fabulous piece of moist salmon was the star of the seafood salad bowl, and the very best British beef results in top-quality steaks from the grill and daily specials board, while vegetarian options such as the vegetable balti won’t fail to please. Hailing from Somerset, there’s Marshfield ice cream to finish; the passion fruit flavour truly floats across your tastebuds. All the dishes are freshly prepared and reasonably priced, but beware, the portions are more than hearty, so come prepared to loosen your belt.

There’s a highly-popular carvery adjacent to the restaurant, serving traditional honest roasts – there is a no-bookings policy on Sundays, so you’ll need to get there early to be guaranteed a seat. With Butcombe’s renowned beers on tap also bringing in the more discerning ale enthusiast, the Woolpack Inn more than fulfils its billing as a famous, delightful country pub close to town.
