On entering The Cambridge, we were greeted by a friendly chattering atmosphere and the warmth of a fabulous open fire - a perfect welcome on a cold wet night in November. Located in a leafy part of Redland, the recently refurbished Cambridge is an ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. A mix of businessmen, couples and friends were seated at the wooden tables talking, laughing and enjoying the excellent food and drink. There is a great choice of excellently kept draught ales, including a regularly changing guest choice. Discovery, Butcombe, London Pride and ESB are accompanied by a contemporary wine list, and manager Paul is a Master Cellarman, so quality is always assured. Little wonder so many visit The Cambridge Arms for an early evening drink to wind down from a day's work, or for the popular quiz on Sunday evenings, whilst others, like ourselves, take refuge in the hearty menu.
The menu offers a huge choice, with plenty of traditional dishes like homemade steak, mushroom and ale pie (£8.75). I had a hard job deciding between the regularly changing specials; was it to be sea bass served with roasted vegetable risotto, or something more traditional? I eventually opted for the chicken breast stuffed with blue Stilton wrapped in pancetta (£8.75). My partner, very typically, ventured for the West Country pork and cider sausages, with fried onions, creamy mash and gravy (£7.95). Nearby diners could be seen clearly enjoying options like burgers (£7.25) and sandwiches, which start at just £4.45. Newly introduced homemade desserts, including sticky toffee pudding and classic bread and butter pudding, are the ideal way to complete your meal. All locals should be like The Cambridge - friends, families and colleagues enjoying good wholesome home-cooked food in stylish and relaxing surroundings. In the summer months The Cambridge opens its garden, perfect for long afternoons in the sun and early evening dining, with the added bonus of hog roasts and summer barbecues - these facilities can also be hired for private functions. It is no surprise to find that this place is so popular and, with its new look, it is sure to continue to be a great hit with more than just the locals.
