In an idyllic location on the outskirts of Pontypridd, the Bunch of Grapes’ traditional exterior tells little of the superb gastropub inside. Cosy alcoves, solid wooden tables and candles create a relaxed atmosphere and the service is friendly and efficient.

The culinary creativity of the chefs is clear – this is British cuisine with panache. Dishes reflect the seasons, while ingredients are locally sourced whenever possible to create starters such as pan-fried cockles, laverbread and home-cured pancetta with charred lemon, and warming main courses like the roasted Welsh venison with parsnips, Jerusalem artichokes and Port and orange jus – perfect on a cold winter’s night. With main courses priced between £13.50 and £24.50 there is something for all tastes and budgets. To finish, indulge in their famous sticky toffee pudding or homemade beer ice creams and all seems well with the world.

The Bunch of Grapes has served the best local real Welsh ales for the past 50 years, including their own multi-award-winning ales, and the wine list is well-priced and varied. There are countless reasons to visit, not least to view the impressive photography dotted throughout. Owner Nick Otley, also a renowned fashion photographer, has extended his creativity to running this exceptional eatery and has created a must-try dining experience.
