The veranda of the old beach shelter on Penarth seafront is, at long last, busy again. After sitting neglected for many years, The Fig Tree opened its doors last summer, and is fast building a reputation for excellent, affordable, imaginative food and friendly, attentive service.

Using local, high-quality seafood, meat and game suppliers, owner Mike Caplan-Hill ensures that The Fig Tree provides the freshest options for lunch and dinner - at very competitive prices. Not content with offering affordable, fresh, seasonal and classic favourites with a contemporary twist, as well as an interesting range of vegetarian options, Mike plans to serve weekend breakfasts in the very near future. The Fig Tree has also recently appointed Simon Newcombe, ex chef-proprietor of The Chandlery and regional winner of last year's True Taste of Wales 'Eating Out' award. The Fig Tree has become a favourite spot for Sunday lunch, couples and families combining a visit to the restaurant with a walk along Penarth's pier or headland. It is also popular for its cakes and pastries, available all day long, and serves Otley and Vale of Glamorgan microbrews, Mandois 2004 Champagne, and Fresita sparkling wine, which is infused with fresh Patagonian strawberries. The Fig Tree also offers a range of locally made Jersey ice creams to take away - just the thing to enjoy while strolling along the promenade.
