Don Paddy’s was born when an Italian chap’s dream to create a restaurant with the laid-back atmosphere of an Irish bar was realised. Now under new management the relaxed atmosphere is ever-present and proving extremely popular. Incredibly busy even on a weekday evening this bustling wine bar and restaurant in the heart of Uppingham is where just about everyone seems to be heading.

After a number of recommendations from friendly manager, James, I decided to go for salmon and dill fishcakes accompanied by salsa and lime creme fraiche. The fishcakes had a satisfyingly crunchy crust with a centre of melt-in-themouth soft potato and fish – the ideal contrast of textures. My companion’s asparagus was firm to bite and wrapped in tasty Parma ham. This dish was completed by homemade hollandaise sauce, which, I am assured, was velvety smooth.

Toad in the hole from the special’s board was my main course of choice, and after getting over the initial surprise that my toad was actually underneath the hole, I was able to appreciate the dish’s meaty sausages, expertly cooked vegetables and crispy Yorkshire pudding, all coated in a rich red wine gravy. My companion’s rump of lamb, which was appealingly pink, was tender and delicious, and perfectly complemented by a pea and mint risotto. We finished the meal with a the perfect chocolate brownie – warm, crispy on the outside and gooey in the middle – and a mango sorbet with juicy pieces of fruit among its refreshing scoops.

At the end of the meal we were introduced to owner, Robert Wills. He is obviously proud of his restaurant – and so he should be.
