The 51-bedroomed Alona Hotel is beautifully situated in the verdant Strathclyde Country Park, with views over the sparkling blue waters of the tree-fringed loch. Its bright and airy Glasshouse Restaurant has a distinctly Continental feel, with umbrella-shaded tables and chairs outside - perfect for enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. This is an ideal venue for virtually any occasion, be it a family celebration, romantic dinner for two or a special treat for ladies who lunch.

Meals, including a sumptuous afternoon tea, are very reasonably priced and head chef Chris Graham deftly changes the menu with regularity to ensure that only the freshest seasonal ingredients are used. Children are well catered for with a menu to tempt the fussiest eater; grownups too have an extensive selection to choose from as well as daily specials. From the wide range of mouth-watering dishes I chose chicken liver paté, which was perfectly complemented by crunchy oatcakes, while my companion opted for a dish of succulent flat cap mushrooms laced with garlic, herbs and red onion. Elegant and delicately flavoured salads made a fresh accompaniment to both starters. Following this came beef stroganoff featuring tender Scottish beef in a creamy yet tangy sauce, and a delicious dish of spinach and cream cheese cannelloni in a rich tomato reduction. A portion of chips came crisp on the outside and soft and floury inside.

Tempting desserts include vodka and chocolate mousse, decadent sticky toffee pudding and a selection of hand-picked Scottish farmhouse cheeses. To complement the food, an excellent selection of reasonably priced wine is on offer from Chile, Italy, Australia and South Africa, as well as a range of whisky, Port and brandy for those who prefer. A large choice of liqueurs, teas and coffees are sure to round off a hugely enjoyable meal.

Guests receive a genuinely warm welcome and smooth, unobtrusive service from the pleasant waiting staff. Altogether, a visit or a stay at the four-star Alona Hotel is highly recommended.
