Situated on the edge of the Ashby Canal and on the main A5 Watling Street, The Lime Kilns proves a popular choice for all kinds of traveller. Originally built as a coaching inn in the late 18th century, The Lime Kilns Inn now offers customers free moorings, a children’s play area, a function room and free wireless connection. Most importantly, they are still serving up great value quality food and fine ales.
Ingredients are sourced locally where possible, meaning that flavour and freshness are apparent in every mouthful. The menu is varied with a good selection of homemade dishes showcasing favourites, vegetarian options and light bites. Most meals come in at around the £7 mark – an impressive figure when you consider the portion sizes and the care taken in putting them together. The specials board tempted us with its lamb in red wine and plum sauce and aubergine and walnut bake, but the homemade fisherman’s pie was delicious, bursting with large, succulent flakes of salmon. The Stilton and vegetable crumble had a wonderfully creamy sauce, plenty of vegetables and was finished with a golden textured topping.
For lovers of fine ales, the guest options change monthly; currently being pulled are the popular Jennings Cocker Hoop and Marstons Old Empire. Special deals range from a £2.50 curry night on Mondays (6pm to 9pm), to the Thursday night offer of two 8oz steaks and a bottle of house wine for £18, and you can even test your general knowledge every Wednesday during the winter months and join in the pub’s quiz.
So whether you partake in a leisurely lunch, quick pint or evening meal, let The Lime Kilns take care of you – even resident ghost, Harry, is said to be a welcoming chap.
