The Lodge, Carfraemill
Carfraemill is the perfect out-of-town venue. Set in the beauty of the Scottish Borders’ countryside, it is just 21 miles south of Edinburgh (approximately a 30-minute drive) and four miles north of the ancient burgh of Lauder on the junction of the A68 and A697. This award-winning business is owned by a local farming family. Jim and Jo Sutherland have created a very special and unique hotel which is open all day every day, providing guests with a warm and friendly welcome, exceptional attention to detail, first-class service, really good Scottish country food (sourced locally) and excellent value for money.
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to dining. The informal Jo’s Kitchen, with its own ruby-red Aga, is a replica of a pioneering home-style kitchen and is ideal for families, with a supply of games, books, toys and drawing materials to keep children happy. The Plantation Bistro Bar and the Conservatory offer comfortable, relaxed surroundings. The Gallery upstairs is a small private dining room for up to 18 people, and The Campbell Room, the more formal wood-panelled dining room, is perfect for wedding receptions, private parties and functions, for which Carfraemill is very popular. Carfraemill is also an ideal venue for conferences and corporate events – an elegant marquee, seating up to 300 people, is attached to the hotel from April until November.
The ten bedrooms, all with immaculate en-suite bathrooms, are a delight, offering the discerning traveller the very best of Borders hospitality and a good night’s rest. Whenever you decide to visit, no matter what the occasion, you’ll find Scottish home cooking, made using recipes that have been handed down through generations. The fresh ingredients are of the highest quality and are very carefully sourced from Scotland and the Borders. The local farming community provide abundant sources of fresh lamb, pork, game, chicken, eggs, fish, fruit, vegetables, farmhouse cheeses and ice creams, not to mention Carfraemill’s famous steaks and ribs of beef.
Carfraemill has been awarded four stars by Visit Scotland and a Silver Award for Green Tourism, as well as numerous awards for good food and excellent service. One visit to this charming lodge and you’ll see that they entirely deserve every one.
