Oscar's Wine Bar and Restaurant
Oscar's Wine Bar and Restaurant was a new venue for us. We had little idea of what to expect and were slightly concerned that we would be a little too 'long in the tooth' for a wine bar. However, we were pleasantly surprised to enter and find that we immediately felt comfortable in the friendly, informal atmosphere. We were warmly welcomed by our host and shown to our table, where a friendly waitress took our drinks order while we studied the menu.
The regular menu offers excellent choice and the daily specials board also displays a wonderful selection of dishes. We were told that ingredients are sourced locally where possible, and with that in mind I settled on a starter of scallops with rocket salad, balsamic dressing and Parmesan shavings, while my husband took the homemade fishcakes with salad and a dill sauce. My scallops were perfectly cooked, juicy, soft and wonderfully complemented by the tangy dressing. For the main course, I chose roast rack of Borders lamb with a honey, rosemary and garlic sauce, along with roasted vegetables and potatoes. The lamb was deliciously moist and tender and the whole dish was first class. My husband opted for chargrilled Aberdeen Angus sirloin steak, served with salad and homemade chips. He's very hard to please when it comes to steak, but pronounced the Oscar's sirloin to be the best that he had tasted in a long time. From a tempting dessert menu, I couldn't resist the creme brűlée and it did not disappoint - sheer bliss in a mouthful. My husband chose cheese and biscuits and now replete, we finished with coffee and chocolate.
Oscar's is the kind of place to go to for a drink with friends, a lovely meal or even an outing with children, as there is a lovely homemade menu for the kids. Although only a Tuesday night Oscar's was busy - a good indication of its popularity. We will be telling our friends and family and hope to be back soon ourselves.
