The intoxicating enthusiasm and passion for Italian food at the Italian Kitchen is infused into both the atmosphere and the cuisine. The restaurant is on a mission to bring authentic tastes of Italy to Glasgow, so, true to the Italian cooking ethos, only the freshest and best ingredients are used.
San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala and extra virgin olive oil reveal an all-important faithfulness to Italian flavours. The pizzas here have won awards, and the rest of the menu certainly lives up to their prize-winning quality; freshly baked focaccia, flavoursome pasta, hearty yet fresh salads and tender local meats mean choosing your lunch has never been so difficult. Vegetarians and non-veggies alike will delight over such dishes as melanzane in carrozza - a starter of aubergines in breadcrumbs, fried and stacked with mozzarella and fresh tomato sugo. The determined carnivores among us won't be able to resist the pan-fried escalope of veal, topped with Parma ham and mozzarella in a sage and white wine sauce with sauté potatoes and vegetables. A great alternative to pasta is a full-bodied risotto, subtly flavoured with haddock and topped with a poached egg, but be careful to leave room for dessert, as you wouldn't want to miss out on traditional Italian tiramisu after such a meal. Finally, in the Italian heart of Glasgow, round it all off with a wee dram of the finest grappa.
The ever-helpful staff really know their way around the wine list and accompanying dishes, so don't forget to ask about the specials and daily-changing fresh fish and seafood dishes. The sophisticated wines are a great accompaniment and the choice big enough to ensure you'll find a bottle (or two) to your liking. With its different levels, cosy booths, understated table settings and quirky wall decor, the open dining area exudes informal chic. Like the food, the atmosphere feels reliably Italian; busy yet laid-back and friendly. So, if Glasgow isn't feeling suitably Mediterranean, step into The Italian Kitchen for a dose of Italian sunshine.
