Many restaurants claim authenticity and uniqueness, but few measure up to the originality of The Italian Caffé. The first of its kind in Glasgow, this 'enoteca' provides a genuine experience that can be found in few places outside of Italy. The idea of the enoteca has evolved from classical Rome - then it was a place where people would stop and enjoy a glass of wine and pass the time with other citizens. So, if you fancy doing as the Romans do, pay a visit to the elegant surroundings of this restaurant, which is focused essentially on the tasting of fine wines accompanied by piccoli piatti - small plates of food, straight from the oven. The spacious dining area has the relaxed atmosphere of a café, the comfort of a restaurant and the feel of a lively bar.

Red, white, rosé, sparkling Champagne and dessert wines are available by the bottle or glass. Perhaps go for something really extraordinary from the 'collezione speciale' - for example, the outstanding Gavi di Gavi la Toledana white wine from the Piemonte region, which has recently been upgraded to DOCG status (the highly prestigious Italian quality assurance label). The piccoli piatti are small enough to be light and fresh, yet at the same time they are packed full of flavour and the rich warmth of Italian food. Order a few to taste across the range of meat, seafood and vegetarian options, not forgetting the pizzette (small Neapolitan pizzas with mouth-watering toppings), pasta and risottos. The verdure (vegetables) features a range of aubergines, mushrooms, peppers, onions and pulses roasted, baked, stewed and stuffed, enhanced with the freshest herbs and the most authentic mozzarella di bufala. Fish and seafood are given the same fantastic treatment, with mussels, langoustines and oysters in a variety of sauces, and skewers of salmon wrapped in fresh sage and pancetta. The Italian Caffé has a loyal customer base, and it's easy to see why. This is the right place for anyone looking for a great time accompanied by great food and wine - and let's face it, who isn't?
