Upon entering The Butterfly and the Pig, you would be forgiven for thinking you had side-stepped into a scene from a Victorian tea party. With its rosewood chairs, hand-engraved cutlery and vintage tablecloths, this restaurant has a retro yet decadent feel.

In addition to a mouth-watering evening menu, there are various specials on offer, each designed with seasonal produce in mind. Intrigue took over at the first course and I opted for the ‘haddie hannan finny fanon’, which translates as smoked haddock, cream cheese and chive paté. My partner’s starter of carrot, coconut and chilli soup had an earthy taste and smooth texture, complemented by a mild spiciness. Our mains illustrated further that a great degree of thought goes into every dish. My sea bass fillets, simply grilled with a pesto sauce, sweet roasted cherry tomatoes and a rocket and Parmesan salad, were fresh and delicious. My companion’s main of lamb cutlets brilliantly combined rich black pudding, apple and a sweet cherry sauce. To finish, a peach and almond tart with vanilla cream was a heavenly homemade delight.

If the Victorian decor, intimate setting and originally constructed menu don’t have you telling your friends about The Butterfly and the Pig, then the wonderful wholesome fare certainly will.
